Makeup has certainly come a long way! Take a peek with me at the compacts and train cases of yesteryear.Do you know what Egyptians were putting on their faces? You can only imagine what the Chinese were putting on their lips!
Tastes haven't changed too much in the past 5,000 years but our pigments certainly have.
A "brief" history may be more than you ever wanted to know. Here's to looking at your face powders and lip colors the same way again.
Have you ever wondered, "What's the difference between Kolinsky Sable and Taklon?" or, "Why do they make some brushes with super long handles while others are rather short?" The paintbrush aisle of the craft store is one of my favorite places to get lost. If you spend a little time there, you may start to see some familiar faces. After all, the difference between a makeup artists' foundation brush and a synthetic fiber Filbert are only in the name. Good info and tips for traditional art folks, makeup artists, and body painters will be covered!
The prospect may seem overwhelming, not simply as a personal challenge but also a financial feat. When I first became interested in makeup artistry, I owned three eye shadows and a tube of mascara. I had no idea where to begin or who to ask! I thought eyelash curlers were ancient artifacts and foundation was akin to concealer.
I am, by far, not a conventional makeup artist. I am a canvas painter who started a strange journey a few years ago that landed me with the job title. Ah, another story for another time.
Within will be all of the starting points and resources I had, or wish I had, that will hopefully make a difference in another budding artist's adventure.
An Introduction to the history of body art and modifications around the world. From the Longhouses of the Americas to the Pyramids! Controversial and socially acceptable practices are covered a like.

Is it even possible?
Why yes, yes it is. In fact, body art has been used to creatively advertise such familiar products and brands as Kahlua (to the left), Sobe Life Water, Fuze, Second Skin Swimwear, Delta Faucets, and AT&T.
At the sound of body painting, the first thoughts that may come to mind are very 18 plus, lewd, or otherwise mature in nature. Possibly conjuring up images of bars or nightclubs as well. So how is that body painting has become such an amazing facet to the advertising world without church protests or parental disapproval?
Creating Realistic Geisha MakeupToo often, I see artists attempting to duplicate the look of the Geisha and missing the mark entirely. I do believe in creative license and experimenting with different looks! However, I think its obvious when we fall into cliches, lacking in cultural knowledge and creativity. The information that follows has been collected during my journey to understand how and why the traditional Geiko and Maiko of Japan adorned themselves in such a way. Knowledge is power!
Henna or "Mehndi" is a gorgeous and intricate Middle Eastern art form focusing on the natural dye of the Henna (Lawsonia inermis) plant. Many cultures, countries, and religions have found symbolism and meaning in the signature orange dye. Some of the most dense and impressive designs can be seen on Hindu and Muslim brides!
Keeping Your Makeup and Your Clients Healthy
A topic I briefly touched on in my article about becoming a Professional Makeup Artist. Knowing how and why to keep it sanitary by using proper materials, tools, and equipment is of the utmost importance. Remember, the health and safety of yourself and your client comes first.
In the paragraphs that follow, I will be discussing body art from the perspective of a Traditional artist turned body painter. Many components of this unique art form will be compared or related to their counterparts in the typical fine arts. All of my experience has been with makeup grade paints applied with brushes and sponges. I have not used airbrush or liquid latex.
Places I've Yapped About
Every year, over 6,000 gamers are drawn to Columbus, Ohio for Origins Game Fair. Held at The Greater Columbus Convention center since 1996, Origins caters to Board Games, Trading Card Games, LARP, Role-Playing, and the less common War Games and Tabletop Miniatures. This coming year, 2012 will mark the 37th year of the fair! Disclaimer: I do not represent nor do I claim to represent the Origins Game Fair staff or the GAMA staff in any way. I'm just a fan girl.
The Pennsic Wars cannot be defined as "Renaissance Festival" nor "Living History." The best description I've heard in my few years would be "Medieval Summer Camp." We dress in period clothing to the best of our ability and camp for two weeks. We teach and attend classes, compete (both athletically and academically), shop, volunteer, and party with approximately 12,000 of our coolest friends.
